What a Rogue Artisan Crossbody Actually Is
A crossbody from the RAVEN Edition line is a commissioned bag, not a stocked SKU. Gordon patterns it from your body measurements, your carry list, and the way you actually wear it — over one shoulder, across the back, slung low for cycling, high and tight for transit. The pattern is drafted, cut, and stitched once. When the bag is done and paid for, the pattern is filed away and not reused for anyone else.
That is the working model. No two bags leaving the shop are identical, even when the brief sounds similar on paper.
Materials: Two Hides, Hand-Picked
Two leathers do most of the work in the shop:
- Full-grain vegetable-tanned leather — the standard for structured bags. It starts firm, takes a crease where your body bends it, and darkens into a patina over months of wear. Most Vancouver crossbody commissions run 4–5 oz body panels with 2–2.5 oz linings.
- Horween Chromexcel — hot-stuffed, wax-rich, and softer out of the gate. Chosen when the brief calls for a slouchier bag that breaks in fast. Heavier than it looks; a Chromexcel crossbody at 3.5 oz body still feels substantial.

Construction Details Worth Knowing
Saddle Stitch, By Hand
Every seam on a Rogue Artisan bag is saddle stitched with two needles and a single waxed thread. A sewing machine locks both sides of the stitch in one direction; saddle stitching locks each stitch against itself, so if a stitch is cut or worn through on one face, the other side holds. For a bag that lives on a hip and rubs against a jacket every day, that is the right call.
Edges, Burnished Not Painted
Edges are slicked with beeswax and burnished by hand against a wooden dowel until the fibre compresses and the edge takes on a soft sheen. No edge paint, no acrylic topcoat. Hardware Choices
Brass or nickel solid cast hardware — buckles, D-rings, slider adjusters — sourced for the brief. Strap adjusters are typically a solid cast slider rather than a stamped plate, because the stamped ones bend under load. Stitched-on leather keepers instead of metal wherever the strap passes through itself, so there is no cold metal against your neck on a bike commute.
Lining and Pockets
Default lining is a 2 oz veg-tan. Internal pockets are sized to the brief — phone sleeve, passport slot, pen loop, key clip — and stitched in flat-felled seams so nothing has raw edges against your stuff. If you want a specific layout, draw it on a piece of paper and send a photo; Gordon will pattern to it.
Built for Vancouver Use
Vancouver is wet from October to April, dry the rest of the year, and salty at the waterfront. A crossbody here has to handle rain on the SkyTrain platform, a bike ride home from Commercial Drive, and a shoulder strap that does not turn into a black streak on a light jacket. A few realities baked into the build:
- Strap edges are burnished and waxed so water beads instead of soaking in.
- Veg-tan bags benefit from a quick wipe-down after a real downpour — the rain care journal walks through the routine.
- Stitch holes are pre-punched with a diamond chisels, then stitched — the waxed thread swells into the hole and sheds water rather than wicking it.
How a Crossbody Commission Runs
The process is the same as any custom leather commission at Rogue Artisan. Short version: email or call with the brief, Gordon confirms scope and a from-price, you approve the pattern, the bag gets built, you pick it up at the East Van studio or it ships across Canada. Local pickup is the default for Vancouver clients; shipping is arranged on request.

The from-price covers a standard layout in the base leathers. Add-ons that move the price:
- Premium Leather (heavier cut or specific tannage request): +$20
- Custom Color (dyed panel, painted edge, contrast stitch): +$8
- Raven Stamp (the embossed maker mark on the bag): +$0
- No Raven Stamp: +$10 — yes, omitting the stamp is the upcharge, because it means a different finishing pass
- Surprise Weird Leather (whatever is sitting in the offcut pile that week): +$0
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you make other bag styles, or only crossbody?
Crossbody is the most-commissioned bag style in the shop, but not the only one. Totes, messenger bags, dopp kits, and small camera slings have all gone out the door as one-offs. Bring the brief and Gordon will tell you what is realistic in the build.
Can I supply my own leather?
Sometimes. If the hide is full-grain, veg-tan or Chromexcel, and in good condition, yes. If it is bonded, split, or PU-coated, no — it will not survive the way the bag should. Gordon checks every hide before a blade touches it either way.
How long does a custom crossbody take?
It depends on the queue and the complexity. A straightforward crossbody in stock leather is quicker than a multi-pocket, lined, dyed-panel build with custom hardware. You will get a real estimate after the brief is discussed, not a guaranteed turnaround date.
Do you ship outside Vancouver?
Yes. Crossbody bags ship across Canada on request. Local pickup at the East Vancouver studio is the default for Vancouver-area clients and is worth doing if you can — fit and strap length get dialled in on the spot.
What is the Raven mark?
Every Rogue Artisan piece is finished with an embossed Raven maker mark unless the client asks otherwise. It is a small stamp, pressed with a hand tool, and it identifies the work as coming from this shop. Omitting it adds $10 because of the extra finishing step.
Can I get a bag in a specific colour?
Yes. Custom dye work is an $8 add-on and covers dyed panels or a full-bag colour. Edge painting in a contrast colour falls under the same line. Bring a reference photo if you have one.
