Why a belt cut to your waist size matters

Most belts you buy — even the "premium" ones — are punched in fixed increments, usually 1 to 2 inches apart, on a blank sized for a generic range. The holes never line up where you actually wear the belt. Either the tail hangs awkwardly past the first loop, or you end up cinching between holes and stretching the leather over time.

A belt made to your measurement is different. Gordon takes your waist size in inches and cuts the strap so the centre hole lands exactly where your belt sits. The strap length is set so the tail rests cleanly behind the first belt loop without bunching. Five holes are punched at one-inch spacing, giving you a few inches of give or take in either direction as the leather breaks in and your waist changes with the seasons.

How the belt is built

Every belt starts with a hand-selected hide. The main stock is 8 to 10 oz full-grain vegetable-tanned leather, which has the body to hold a buckle without folding or creasing at the holes. For a softer, more broken-in feel from day one, Horween Chromexcel in roughly 8 oz is also available — it has that waxy, pull-up look and stretches less over time than most chrome tans.

Stitching

Belt straps are saddle-stitched by hand using waxed polyester thread. Saddle stitching means each hole is passed through twice with a separate needle, so if one stitch ever wears or gets cut, the rest of the row holds. Machine stitching unravels when a single thread breaks — saddle stitching doesn't.

Edges

Edges are burnished with beeswax and a bone folder, not painted or sealed with synthetic edge coat. It takes longer and the edge darkens with handling rather than flaking off. On a belt you wear daily, that's the right trade-off.

Buckle hardware

Solid brass roller buckles and centre-bar buckles are standard, in polished or antique finish. Stainless steel is available on request. The buckle is attached with a chicago screw, not a rivet — so you can swap the buckle later or replace a worn one without sending the belt back.

Sizing: what Gordon needs from you

To cut a belt to size, Gordon needs your waist measurement in inches — measured over the trousers you'd normally wear the belt with, not over a t-shirt and not over a winter coat. If you already have a belt that fits well, lay it flat and measure from the inside of the buckle fold to your most-used hole. That number is what gets used.

Common widths:

• 1.25" — dress and casual, fits most belt loops on jeans and trousers
• 1.5" — standard for jeans and work pants, also the default for most belt loops on heavier trousers
• 1.75" — for wider loops on work pants and some casual trousers

Leather options and how they age

Vegetable-tanned leather starts light — natural, tan, or dyed — and darkens steadily with sun, skin oils, and rain. A natural veg-tan belt worn daily in Vancouver will be visibly darker at the buckle fold and lighter near the holes within a few months. That's the patina working. Chromexcel comes out of the box with a deeper colour and a waxy surface that shows lighter streaks where the belt bends. It doesn't patina the same way as veg-tan — it just gets darker and more polished at the contact points. Both leathers are full-grain, meaning the surface is the actual top of the hide, not a corrected or sanded-down layer. Built for Vancouver weather and daily use

A belt here has to handle rain, jeans, and the occasional bike commute. Veg-tan will darken unevenly if it gets soaked regularly — that's normal and most owners like it. Chromexcel shrugs off water better but should still be dried at room temperature, not on a radiator. Thickness matters too. A 10 oz belt is a serious strap — it won't fold or flop, and it'll take a few weeks of daily wear to break in. An 8 oz belt is more comfortable from day one but will show creases sooner. Both outlast a department-store belt by years.

Leather belts start at $95 CAD. That covers the strap, five holes, edge finishing, and a solid brass buckle. Optional add-ons:

Pickup, shipping, and other leatherwork

Local pickup is available in East Vancouver once the belt is finished. Shipping across Canada is available on request — belts ship flat, not rolled, so the strap arrives straight. Frequently asked questions

How long does a custom belt take?

Lead time depends on the queue. Gordon will give you a current estimate when you reach out. No two belts are made ahead of time — every strap is cut to the waist measurement you provide.

Can I send in my own buckle?

Yes. If you have a buckle you'd like used, send it along and the strap will be cut and finished to fit it. Make a note when you get in touch so the chicago screw size matches.

What if my waist size changes?

Because the belt is cut to your measurement with five holes at one-inch spacing, you have roughly two inches of room either way before the strap is too short. If your size changes dramatically, a new strap can be cut from the same hide if stock is still available.

Do you make belts with exotic leathers?

Vegetable-tanned and Chromexcel are the main stock. Exotic hides can sometimes be sourced — get in touch with what you have in mind and Gordon will let you know what's workable.

Will the belt stretch?

Vegetable-tanned leather relaxes slightly over the first few weeks of wear, then stabilises. Chromexcel stretches less than most chrome-tanned leathers. A belt cut to your exact waist accounts for a small amount of break-in.

Is the belt marked with a logo?

Every piece from Rogue Artisan can carry an embossed Raven maker mark on the inside of the strap. It's free to keep it on, and oddly enough it's cheaper than asking for it to be left off — see the add-on list above.
