Why a Commission Beats Off-the-Shelf

Most "personalized" leather means a lasered name on a factory wallet. That's not what happens here. You describe the carry habits — front pocket, jacket breast, bag organizer — and I cut a pattern for that exact life. The stitch count, the leather weight, the edge finish: all decided per build. A groom's party gets five Card Holders in different Chromexcel shades with initials blind-stamped inside. A retirement Bifold gets a hidden pocket for a specific challenge coin. The spec lives once, then it's retired.

Four Pieces That Ship Often

Awl Guard Key Fob — from $35

Three ounces of veg-tan, saddle-stitched with 0.6 mm Tiger thread, edges burnished to glass. The awl guard slot protects the tip of a stitching awl or a small multitool. Add a split ring or a trigger snap. Custom colour +$8 picks from the current dye rack — oxblood, forest, natural, black. No two fobs leave with the same edge bevel.

Card Holder — from $65

Two card slots and a centre cash channel, cut from 3 oz veg-tan or 3.5 oz Chromexcel. Saddle stitch at 9 SPI, holes punched with a 3 mm French pricking iron. Edges: bevelled, dyed, gum tragacanth burnished, then waxed. Fits a front pocket without the brick profile. Blind deboss initials sit centred on the face or tucked inside the cash channel — your call.

Classic Bifold — from $115

Six card slots, two full-length bill compartments, optional coin pocket with a snap. Built on 4 oz veg-tan or 3.5 oz Chromexcel. Interior divisions are skived to 1.5 oz so the fold stays thin. Stitch line runs 3 mm from the edge, locked with backstitches at every stress point. Break-in: two weeks of daily carry and the wallet moulds to your hip curve; Chromexcel darkens faster, veg-tan amber slower.

Passport Sleeve — from $95

Holds a Canadian passport plus two card slots and a boarding-pass slip. Cut from 3.5 oz Chromexcel or 4 oz veg-tan. The spine is a single folded piece — no glued liner to delaminate. Stitch at 8 SPI with 0.8 mm thread for the heavier turn. Edges get a double burnish: first pass dry, second with beeswax block. Rain on the SkyTrain? Chromexcel shrugs it off; veg-tan wants a quick wipe and a day to dry flat.

Hide Selection Happens in Person

I pull hides from the rack, flex them, check for belly stretch and brand scars. You point. That side of that hide becomes your piece. Veg-tan runs 3–5 oz depending on the pattern; Chromexcel stays consistent at 3.5 oz. Premium leather +$20 covers Horween Shell Cordovan offcuts when I have them, or a special pull from the Horween archive. No swatch cards — you see the actual skin.

Edge Work You Can Feel

No edge paint. No folded-and-glued seams. Every exposed edge is bevelled at 45°, sanded through 400 to 1200 grit, dyed to match the face, then burnished with a canvas wheel and finished with a beeswax/carnauba blend. Run a thumbnail along the wallet spine — no ridge, no fuzz. That finish holds through Vancouver rain cycles, but it ages: the wax wears, the dye deepens, the edge rounds naturally.

Stitch Specifics

Saddle stitch, two needles, one thread. If one strand cuts, the other holds — machine lockstitch can't say that. Thread: 0.6 mm Tiger for 3 oz goods, 0.8 mm for 4 oz and bags. Stitches per inch: 9 for wallets, 8 for bags and passport sleeves. Pricking iron: 3 mm French for clean holes, 3.38 mm for heavier Chromexcel. Backstitches at every corner and strap anchor. Thread ends buried between layers, not melted.

Vancouver Carry Realities

Bike commute down 10th Ave in November? Chromexcel handles the drizzle; veg-tan needs a wax coat before the wet season. Transit card tap through the Card Holder works fine — 3 oz leather doesn't block NFC. Passport Sleeve fits the new polycarbonate-page Canadian passport without forcing. Belt loops on the Bifold? How a Commission Works

Message or call — describe the recipient, the occasion, the carry style.
I send a spec sheet: leather, colour, stitch, hardware, stamp placement, price.
You approve. I pull the hide, cut, stitch, finish.
Pick up in East Vancouver or I ship anywhere in Canada.

No deposits for pieces under $200. Larger builds: half down, half on completion. Timeline runs two to four weeks depending on the queue. I'll tell you the week it ships.

FAQ

Can I get a set of groomsmen gifts with different colours?

Yes. Each piece gets its own spec sheet. Five Card Holders in five Chromexcel shades — oxblood, navy, cigar, black, natural — each with initials placed differently. Five specs, five prices, one invoice.

Do you laser or hand-stamp personalization?

Hand tools only. Brass type set, arbor press, blind deboss or foil. Lasers burn the fibre and leave a hard edge. A hand stamp compresses the grain; it ages with the leather.

What if the recipient wants to change something after they see it?

Changes before cutting: free. After cutting: new leather, new build, new invoice. That's why the spec sheet matters — we agree on paper before the knife hits hide.

Is there a minimum order for custom gifts?

No minimum. One Awl Guard Key Fob at $35 gets the same bench time as a $265 Crossbody Bag.

Can you ship to the US or overseas?

Canada only right now. Cross-border paperwork for leather goods eats the margin on small pieces. If you have a Canadian address, I'll ship there.

How do I know the leather is full-grain?

Come see the hide. I'll show you the grain side, the flesh side, the brand mark, the thickness gauge reading. Full-grain means the epidermis is intact — no sanding, no correction. You'll see the pores.
